Quirky Roadside Canadian Attractions
Quirky Roadside Canadian Attractions I love my country and I love 'to' travel. Not sure when I will be able 'to' once again, 'hit the road' but it's fun 'to' look for different and unique places 'to' visit. While these may not be destinations in and of themselves, these quirky roadside attractions certainly make the journey across Canada more interesting! The Sourtoe Cocktail The Sourdough Saloon in Dawson City, Yukon has a rather unusual item on its drinks menu: a cocktail containing a mummified human toe. Yes, really. The toe is said to have belonged to a turn-of-the-century rum runner who lost his digit to frostbite while evading the local law enforcement. If you can manage 'to' down a Sourtoe Cocktail (and “kiss” the toe which bobs around in your glass) you will walk away with a little extra swagger—and a certificate commemorating the achievement. Who is ready 'to' try it? The Moss Lady If you’ve got in the car and they’ve seen the Disney flick Moana, they’ll be doubly enchanted with Victoria’s “moss lady.” Artist Dale Doebert’s 35-foot-long sculpture of a dozing figure looks as though it could rise from the earth at any moment, just like Te Fiti in the film. You will find this lovely lady in Beacon Hill Park, Victoria, British Columbia. The World's Largest Easter Eggs The Vegreville Pysanka was built in 1975 as a tribute 'to' the early Ukrainian settlements east of Edmonton. With a claim to fame as “the world’s largest Easter egg,” this roadside attraction in Vegreville, Alberta is a true marvel of design, its patterns containing 3,512 facets, 2,206 equilateral triangles and 524 star shapes. Ghostown Blues B&B If you’ve ever imagined yourself starring in a western, you’ll be tempted 'to' turn this pitstop in Maple Creek, Saskatchewan, into an overnight stay. At the Ghostown Blues B&B, you’ll get the full cowboy experience, from eating your dinner out of the back of a covered wagon, 'to' sleeping under the stars. The World’s Largest Lumberjack In Ontario’s Algonquin Highlands, Sawyer the lumberjack, at 14 feet high, stands head and shoulders above the competition. You’ll find this charming roadside attraction outside the Stanhope Heritage Discovery Museum, where it pays homage 'to' the region’s rich logging history. Magnetic Hill Drive 'to' the bottom of this world-famous hill, in Moncton, New Brunswick, shift into neutral and then brace yourself as your car starts rolling uphill. It’s a gravitational mystery you’ll have 'to' see—and feel—'to' believe. |

Who is ready for a road trip? When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro. The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.

I am more than ready for a road trip. And any day in Canada is a good day. However, USA's criminally incompetent COVID response has made us social lepers across the planet. So I await happier times before I can resume my globetrotting.

There's no way I'm drinking anything with a toe in it. I've seen the BC tours that take you out in a boat to watch the humpback whales, I'd like to see that.

Thank you for the tid bits and helping Tourism Canada. I can vouch for the Magnetic Hill. You feel like you are going uphill backwards and have to steer.

Having grown up watching Gunsmoke I found this place on the road between Cochrane, Alberta and Hinton, Alberta enticing. Did not see Miss Kitty, Marshal Dillon, Chester or any other Gunsmoke characters though. [image]
